Our Gold Coast Fence Guide
Fences are a popular solution for most Gold Coast home owners. You can help protect your yard from strong winds, add security and privacy, and stop your pets or children from wandering off.
When it comes to building a fence, there are a few things you need to consider.
- What style of fence would you like?
- What kind of features do you need? (Acoustic/security/decorative/etc)
- Do you want your fence to match the other homes in the street?
- What kind of weather conditions are you dealing with?
- What are the requirements of your local council?
Luckily, the City of Gold Coast has created a guide for residential fences that you can download and use to help you choose your fence. It has heaps of information about what foliage to pair with your fence, and how to get your application approved by your local council.
According to the City of Gold Coast, you will need to obtain a building permit if your fence is:
- greater than 2m in height above ground level
- greater than 1.2m high in the waterfront setback area
- inconsistent with an earlier approval
- a retaining wall fence combination, exceeding 2 metres in height above natural ground level, and the retaining wall section is greater than 1 metre in height
If you are unsure about how to obtain a building permit, all you have to do is contact our team. Our Gold Coast fence builders will help you to navigate all the paperwork to make sure your experience is stress-free.
For hot and humid environments, it’s best to choose a fencing material that is weather resistant.
Wooden fences aren’t a great choice in the Gold Coast area. Whilst they can be treated to stop rotting and weather damage, they do require more maintenance.
Slat screen fences are particularly popular in this region. Slat screen fences are great because they allow homeowners to have privacy without completely blocking out their natural environment. It is a contemporary style that has a beachy feel, allowing the breeze to flow through.
Another popular alternative is a PVC picket fence. You can still get the traditional picket fence look without having to worry about the issues with wood. Short picket fences are great because they don’t obstruct your view and can let your front yard stand out as a feature.
